The BC Paraplegic Foundation provides essential financial support to enable the successful delivery of Spinal Cord Injury BC’s Peer Program and Information Services. In addition, the Foundation awards annual scholarships and bursaries to students with spinal cord injury who meet the Foundation’s funding criteria.
The Foundation was established in 1975 when employees of Premier Cablevision collected funds in memory of a co-worker who suffered a spinal cord injury. Their donation was matched by the company and totaled just over $1,000.
Today, the Foundation holds assets valued at over $6 million, and relies on investment income, donations from individuals and corporations, and bequests to achieve its charitable goals. All contributions of funds and volunteer efforts are gratefully accepted. The Doug Mowat Memorial Golf Tournament, a popular Vancouver fundraiser for the BC Paraplegic Foundation, is held each summer. It is named in honour of the SCI BC’s first Executive Director and a pioneer in the disability community.
