Our SCI BC race team will be taking part in the VIRTUAL Scotiabank Charity Challenge! We’ve compiled some helpful tips and frequently asked questions below to help you plan for this exciting event!

What is the Scotiabank Charity Challenge and Why Should I Participate?

The Scotiabank Charity Challenge is an annual 5 km and half-marathon fundraising race, with teams raising money for over 70 local non-profit organizations!

This year, due to COVID-19, the race at Stanley Park has been cancelled, but the race organizers have created a virtual race, and continued to allow charities access to the fundraising site for free! Everyone is welcome to join, both wheelchair-users and able-bodied folks. We would love for you to participate and help us reach our goal of $50,000! Funds raised go directly to our Peer Programs and Information Services for all British Columbians living with an SCI or related disability.

Who Can Participate?

Anyone! We encourage SCI BC Peers to participate. But the race is open to all friends, family, and supporters from near and far. Because the race is virtual this year – it doesn’t matter where you live!

How do I register?

Registration is easy. Contact Shelley at smilstein@sci-bc.ca and we can take it from there! If you can commit to raising at least $100, we’ll cover your registration costs.

What Does it Cost to Participate?

If you are able to commit to raising a minimum of $100 for SCI BC, we will waive your registration fee to join the team! Otherwise, the registration cost is $35.

When is Race Day?

You have from July 1-30 to complete your fitness goal of 5, 10 or 21K. Join us on July 30 for a virtual race day on social media and an online Zoom celebration!

Where Do I Race? How Do I Log My Time?

Anywhere! You can complete your distance wherever you want (sidewalks, parks, backyard, living rooms, accessible trails, etc.). Once complete, visit Sportstats to upload your race time. Instructions on how to do this are provided here.

If you don’t feel comfortable leaving your house due to COVID you can modify your activity however you like. Try a 30-day yoga challenge, 5KM on the hand ergometer, or 5 hours of our online fitness classes!

Do I Have to Fundraise?

Fundraising is a very important part of this event! All of your fundraising dollars will go directly towards helping people with SCI or related disabilities adjust, adapt, and thrive. This is our biggest fundraising event of the year and it’s crucial that we raise enough money to help keep our programs and events running!

I Don’t Want to Race. How Else Can I Contribute?

There are lots of other ways to still be involved in this special event! You can donate to the team or sponsor a participant to help them reach their fundraising goal. You can also help us spread the word, chime in on social media, send encouraging messages to racers, or raise funds within your personal network for our organization. Reach out to us if you’d like to get involved but aren’t sure how!

How do I Get My T-shirt and Medal?

Your finishers medal and shirt will be mailed out to you by Canada Running Series.
