Reports to: Executive Director

About the Project

In early 2021, the Disability Foundation received funding from the City of Vancouver to develop a comprehensive network of disability service organizations in the city. The Network Building Project is a collaborative initiative intended to bring together and build capacity in the broad disability sector. Led by the Disability Foundation and working closely with the City of Vancouver and Vancouver Coastal Health, this project was created to strengthen the disability community by sharing information, building relationships, and increasing resources available to persons living with disabilities in Vancouver and the Vancouver Coastal Health Region.

This initiative emerged from the pandemic experience where:

1. Organizations serving people with disabilities did not have a formal structure through which to connect/communicate with each other, work together to improve policy and funding opportunities, and provide integrated, comprehensive support services for people with disabilities.

2. An organized communication platform between the disability network and policy-makers and decision-makers (including the City of Vancouver and Vancouver Coastal Health) was seen as an existing gap.

Through conversations with the Disability Alliance BC, City of Vancouver and subsequently Vancouver Coastal Health, an initiative was proposed to foster network building among disability organizations/service providers.

The network will create and sustain relationships with non-profit disability organizations to achieve the following goals:

Goal 1: Build a network (“Disability Network”) that organizes similar non-profits to collaborate, learn, and provide feedback to policy-makers. A planning committee will lead the network, and will be comprised of member organizations representing a wide range of the community. Decisions about the network will be made based on the needs of the community.

Goal 2: Develop and maintain a relevant and up-to-date database of non-profit organizations (“Disability Network Database”) whose missions involve people with disabilities. The geographical scope of the records in the database is limited to the city of Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver and Richmond.

Goal 3: A flow of communication that allows policy-makers to easily reach out to the disability community via the Disability Network.
