From November 21st to the 26th top club curlers from across Canada gathered together to compete in The Dominion Curling Club Championship. Each year the tournament raises much needed funds for the Canadian Paraplegic Association. This year, the event was held in Richmond, BC, with all proceeds benefitting Spinal Cord Injury BC (SCI-BC). Not only did the best teams from across the country show BC some amazing curling, but the tournament raised an astounding $58,000 for SCI-BC.
The Dominion Curling Club Championship organizing committee, including SCI-BC staffers Shelley Milstein and Gary Steeves, created a variety of fundraising initiatives for the event, kicking it all off with an online fundraising contest for curlers and their teams. The goal was to raise $20,000, however due to the sweeping energy and rock solid commitment of the curlers more than $32,000 was raised during the online campaign.
Curlers and their supporters joined in on the fun at the championship event raising funds through daily 50-50 draws, raffles, and a stellar silent auction. At the end of the tournament the curlers and their supporters had raised a total of $58,000 for SCI-BC, above and beyond all expectations.
Executive Director of SCI-BC, Chris McBride says “On behalf of SCI-BC, I would like to thank everyone who participated in The Dominion Curling Club Championship. Whether you were a participant, organizer, volunteer, or sponsor, each and everyone one of you succeeded in making The Dominion Curling Club Championship a ‘world-class’ event, not to mention the most important fundraiser of the year for SCI-BC”.
The funds raised will go to SCI-BC’s Peer Program which helps people with spinal cord injury (or related disability) and their families, adjust, adapt and thrive. Click here to learn more about SCI-BC’s Peer Program.
