Spring Hawes, Team Captain of SCI BC’s Okanagan Team
Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your role at SCI BC.
I’m the Peer Program Coordinator in the Okanagan. I live in Kelowna. I’ve been a quadriplegic since a mountain bike injury in 2005.
I work for SCI BC because I believe in the value and strength of the disability community, and I love getting to meet, talk to, and know so many peers in the Okanagan! I have two grown kids, and a little granddaughter who is just the best. I love to eat, read, learn, and travel. I’ve also been an advocate for a long time, and I write and teach about ableism.
What are your personal fundraising goals this year?
$500
How are you preparing for this year’s Charity Challenge?
I’m planning some local Charity Challenge events for June. That’ll be a nice chance to get together in each of the communities for a walk, roll or ride, and to do a little fundraising! In the meantime, I’ll be spreading the word and asking everyone else to do the same.
Why should people support SCI BC?
SCI BC supports people with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities in lots of different ways. One of the most important ways, in my opinion, is peer-to-peer networking. Peers can support each other in really unique and powerful ways – by sharing their experiences and challenges, but also their tips, tricks, and life hacks.
