We encourage everyone with a spinal cord injury or related physical disability to become a member of SCI BC. We also invite family members and anyone else who is connected to the SCI community to join.

Becoming an SCI BC member connects you to community, support and opportunities across British Columbia. Whether you’re newly injured, a long-time peer, or a friend or family member of the SCI community, membership helps you stay informed, involved and heard.

While many SCI BC services, such as our toll free InfoLine and online resources, are available to everyone, becoming a member gives you added benefits and ways to stay involved.

Note: Regular Membership is free, but if you would like to help guide the future of SCI BC, please sign up for our Voting Membership with an annual fee of just $10.

Keep scrolling to learn about the benefits of becoming a member.

To update your information, simply complete the membership form again. For help or if you are moving out of province, contact the SCI InfoLine anytime.

Why Become an SCI BC Member?

1. It’s Easy and Free to Join

Signing up takes just 10 minutes using our simple online form. Your free membership automatically renews each year, so there’s nothing extra to remember.

2. Attend In-Person and Online Events

As a member, you’ll be first to hear about events in your region, including those with limited space. Each month, SCI BC hosts 60+ online and throughout BC, including peer meetups, fitness classes, summer BBQs, holiday parties, camping, kayaking and more!

3. Receive a Printed Copy of The Spin in Your Mailbox

The Spin is SCI BC’s quarterly magazine featuring cutting-edge research, real-life stories, the latest SCI health news, and innovations for people with SCI. Our readers tell us it’s not your average non-profit mail out! A physical, full-colour copy lets you take a break from screens, revisit articles easily, and share the magazine with family and friends.

4. Get SCI BC Newsletters in Your Inbox

Stay up to date on what’s happening at SCI BC with our newsletters! Our monthly Peer Newsletter shares events and announcements, research opportunities, partner news and more. And our monthly Online Events newsletter links you directly to online peer meetups, fitness classes and educational webinars.

5. Connect With Your Local Peer Program Coordinator

Your local Peer Program Coordinator will invite you (and your family!) to all the events in your area and occasionally check in to offer advice, connect you with helpful resources or simply have a friendly conversation. If you prefer not to receive these calls, you can easily opt out.

6. Stay Connected When You Move

Moving to a new city can be challenging, especially when it comes to finding resources, support and community. Wherever you go in BC, we’re here to help you transition smoothly. We will connect you with the Peer Program Coordinator in your new region so you can access local resources and support networks right away.

7. Collect Data for Better SCI Support

By registering as an SCI BC member, you help us gather important data on the SCI community in BC, including the prevalence of SCI. Accurate, up to date information strengthens our efforts to advocate for increased funding and may help inform government decisions related to medical, legal and social services.

8. Shape and Improve SCI BC Programs

We actively seek feedback from our members to help us start, shape and improve programs that meet the real and evolving needs of the SCI community. For example, The Road Ahead program started with a member survey that helped identify priorities related to aging with SCI.

9. We Advocate for Your Needs in Key Discussions

SCI BC advocates on behalf of our members in important decision making spaces at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels. Your feedback helps guide our participation in government stakeholder consultations, accessibility and inclusion committees, and other key policy and planning discussions. We ensure your voice is represented where decisions are made.

Voting Membership

In addition to enjoying all the perks of a Regular Membership, you’ll have a say in key decisions, such as electing board members. Voting takes place at our virtual Annual General Meeting each fall.

A Voting Membership is just $10 per year. If renewal fees aren’t paid by the deadline, members will automatically be switched to Non-Voting status, with the option to re-register as a Voting Member at any time.
