SCI BC now offers three optional texting (SMS) streams, so you can choose how and when you hear from us.

Choose to receive:

  • Philanthropy & Donation Updates
  • Emergency & Climate Related Alerts
  • Peer Member Event Updates, based on your region/city

You’re always in control. Opt in to one, two or all three.

Note: We’re rolling out our texting service in phases throughout June and July 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Our texting service is a new, optional way for you to receive timely updates from Spinal Cord Injury BC right to your mobile phone. We’ll use SMS text messaging to share urgent alerts, local event reminders, and opportunities to support our work.

We’ve created three dedicated phone numbers, so you can subscribe only to the types of messages that matter to you.

We offer three separate message streams:

Emergency & ClimateRelated Alerts

Used for urgent notifications related to emergencies, climate impacts, service disruptions and safety information.

Peer Member Event Updates (by Region/City)

Used for event announcements, reminders and lastminute changes for SCI BC events in your community.

Philanthropy & Donation Updates

Used for fundraising campaign updates, opportunities to support SCI BC, and stories that highlight the impact of your generosity.

You can subscribe to any or all of these streams.

Opting in is optional, and you can change your preferences at any time.

There are two ways to subscribe:

1. Respond “YES” to the message we send

If we already have your mobile number, you may receive a text inviting you to opt in. Simply reply YES to confirm..

2. Update your contact information online

Complete our membership form and select which text streams you’d like to receive.

  • Already a member? Please fill out the form again (it takes about 10 minutes) so we have your most uptodate information.
  • Once your membership is processed, you’ll receive a text from each number and can choose to opt in or out.

If you experience any issues, contact the SCI InfoLine for assistance.

You can unsubscribe from any message stream at any time.

  • Reply STOP to the number you want to stop receiving messages from.

Once you unsubscribe, you will no longer receive messages from that specific number unless you opt in again.

  • Philanthropy & Donation Updates: 604-326-1217
  • Emergency & Climate Related Alerts: 604-326-1225
  • Peer Member Event Updates: 604-326-1255

We recommend adding these to your contacts so you can easily recognize them.

  • Emergency & Climate-Related Alerts: YES. Messages may be automated and are monitored during business hours. This service is not monitored 24/7. If you are experiencing an emergency, please call 911.
  • Peer Member Event Updates: NO. This number is for oneway communication only.
  • Philanthropy & Donation Updates: NO. This number is for oneway communication only.

We’re committed to sending helpful, relevant updates.

Approximate frequency:

  • Emergency & Climate-Related Alerts: Only when needed
  • Peer Member Event Updates: 1-3 messages per month, depending on your region.
  • Philanthropy & Donation Updates: 7-10 times a year.

We will never send multiple messages to you in a single day unless an emergency message is necessary.

We’ve heard from our community that people want more choice in how they receive information. With so much content competing for attention, not everyone finds it easy to keep up through email or social media alone.

Texting offers short, timely updates, while our newsletters continue to provide more detailed information.

The SCI InfoLine is a personalized support service where you can connect directly with our team for answers, resources and guidance related to spinal cord injury and living with a disability.

While both services use text messaging, they serve very different purposes.

Yes, it’s safe to click links in messages sent by SCI BC. Our texts may include links that take you to official SCI BC webpages with more information about an alert, event or campaign.

We take your safety seriously:

  • Links are only sent from our official SCI BC texting numbers
  • We’ll never ask for sensitive personal information (like passwords or banking details) by text

Requests for financial support will only come from our Philanthropy & Donation Updates number.  If you’re receiving Emergency & Climate-Related Alerts or Peer Member Event Updates, those messages will never include fundraising requests.

If you’re ever unsure about a message:

  • Check the phone number it came from (we recommend saving our numbers in your contacts)
  • Contact the SCI InfoLine to confirm whether a message is legitimate

We follow CASL requirements by:

  • Getting clear, express consent
  • Identifying SCI BC in every message
  • Providing an easy optout (reply STOP)
  • Keeping records of consent preferences

You always stay in control of what kinds of messages you receive.

Your privacy matters to us.

  • We do not sell or share your mobile number.
  • We use location information (such as city or region) only to send relevant local updates.
  • Text messages are used only for the purposes you’ve selected.

If you received an initial invitation text, it means we had a phone number on file that may be a mobile number. You are not subscribed unless you reply YES.

If this number does not belong to you or you do not wish to receive messages, simply reply STOP.

Please contact the SCI InfoLine to update your contact information so you don’t miss future messages.
