ASK AN EXPERT Essential Needs Research Report – Supporting the Case of Catheter Coverage

This past fall, SCI Ontario published the Essential Needs Report in partnership with the University of Manitoba. The report examines public coverage programs of medical supplies across Canada, outlining the case for more comprehensive coverage in each province. It focuses on the lack of coverage and differences in each province for essential and life saving equipment, including catheters, attendant services for activities of daily living, and wheelchairs. Dr. Cowley, author of the Research Project will go over the findings in the report and Peter Athanasopoulos will discuss how SCI Ontario is using this to create an engagement campaign in order to mobilize the community and help the public understand the barriers that people with disabilities face each day.

About the speakers:

  • Dr. Kristine Cowley is a person with 37 years living with a spinal cord injury. She has a doctorate in neurophysiology and is an associate professor and Director of the Spinal Cord Research Centre at the University of Manitoba. She lives in Winnipeg with her spouse and three children.
