This free online course was initially aimed at paramedics but is appropriate for any medical professional who wants to know more about autonomic dysreflexia. Caregivers, family members, and people with SCI are also welcome to take the course.
The consequences of uncontrolled spikes in blood pressure, known as autonomic dysreflexia (AD), after SCI are extremely severe. People with SCI have a two-fold higher risk of developing heart disease in comparison to non-injured individuals. Furthermore, cardiovascular dysfunction is currently a leading cause of death among people with SCI. Knowledge helps prevent autonomic dysreflexia from occurring and can reduce the seriousness of an episode.
