These departments provide a variety of services, equipment and programs to support the educational goals of students with disabilities. They give transition information for prospective students and offer help with admission and registration procedures. The centres maintain individualized services to current students, and support services to faculty and employees of the college with regard to accessibility and reasonable accommodations.
Each eligible student is assessed for their needs in terms of participation in classes and fulfillment of course requirements. Accommodations can include special technology, extended time and private arrangements for completion of assignments and exams and regular follow up.
Often, students with disabilities can take a reduced course load while still qualifying for full-time status and the associated benefits that go with it. The centres also liaise with community-based services in establishing career plans for individual students with disabilities.
It is best to ask about the Accessibility Services department at the college / university of your choice prior to beginning your studies or prior to the semester you are about to start so that you benefit from their assistance the most.
