Here is a list of scholarships and bursaries available to students with disabilities in BC. In addition to the options listed here, students are also encouraged to investigate funding through their school’s financial aid office, Student Aid BC, location-specific funding and programs through their parents’ workplaces. Program deadlines vary each year, so be sure to check regularly to ensure your application is on time.
BC Paraplegic Foundation Bursary
A variety of awards are available through the BCPF; see the website for updated application information and deadlines.
Gert Vorsteher Educational Bursary
This award, administered by the BC Rehab Foundation, provides awards up to $5000 per person.
Gragopean Scholarship Fund and Supplemental Award
This fund is specifically for students with a spinal cord injury who will pursue education in BC. Eligible expenses that will be considered include tuition, textbooks or similar learning aids. Supplemental costs could include transportation, housing, attendant care, etc.
This bursary is for students with significant physical disabilities.
NEADS National Student Awards Program
This national organization for disabled students has a variety of awards; see the website for updated application information and deadlines.
SCI Canada has one application for multiple awards for people with SCI, including one for peer volunteers at the SCI organizations across Canada.
The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award
This is not a “disability specific” award, though many recipients have faced and overcome physical disabilities. Applicants are chosen on a combination of humanitarian or volunteer work, personal experience overcoming obstacles, participation in community and sports groups, and academic standing.
