Rod Bitz, Team Captain of SCI BC’s Fraser Valley Team

Tell us about yourself and tell us what being a team captain means to you.

I am the Peer Coordinator with SCI BC for the Fraser Valley and team captain for SCI BC’s Team Fraser Valley. I have experienced both personally and in the community the positive impact SCI BC programs and services have had on persons living with an SCI. My experiences revolve around an active lifestyle with wheelchair sports and fitness. As well, as attending the many events and activities provided through SCI BC. As the team captain for Fraser Valley, I am working towards raising funds to assist SCI BC with continued support for the SCI community.

What are you looking to achieve during this year’s Charity Challenge?

I am hoping to have as many people join my team and make a small contribution to SCI BC to reach my goal of $5000. Every little bit helps, the price of a couple coffees adds up. As well, as to have as many team members get out and participate in one of the many activities provided for the Charity Challenge. Hopefully, this fundraiser will encourage more peers to become active with SCI BC.

How will your team be participating in this year’s virtual Charity Challenge?

I will be participating in person on June 25 in the 5km roll/run. I will be encouraging all peers to either join me or enjoy an activity of their choice for an hour. I would like to have peers join me for a fishing day in Abbotsford in early June, of course food and beverages will provided.

How do you motivate yourself to stay active?

I realize the importance of an active lifestyle for health reasons. I have a mindset that not everyday, I will climb Mount Everest however, I will engage in some sort of physical movement. A wheel around the neighborhood, a swim at the local community centre or a home workout. Like a small donation towards SCI BC adds up to great things. A little physical activity daily adds up to a healthier person.
