Residents’ Bill of Rights BC Guide

Updated on July 6, 2026

This Clicklaw guide (on the right side of the page) to the rights of people living in long term care sets out what to expect when living in long term care and what is within your rights to advocate for. This guide will also be useful for family members and advocates of those living in long term care.

Residents’ Bill of Rights was added to the Community Care and Assisted Living Act and Residential Care Regulations, as well as the Hospital Act for residents in private hospital and extended care facilities. These Bills of Rights can be an important legal mechanism to interpret and understand the required approach to care and quality of life for residents: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/health-safety/home-community-care/accountability/pdf/adultcare_bill_of_rights.pdf
