Charity Challenge 2023: Team Captain Profile with Bert Abbott

Meet Bert, the team captain of Vancouver Island North! He's one of the eight team captains who are organizing Charity Challenge regional teams so that peers from all over BC can join an SCI BC team in their own communities to fundraise and participate in races together.

Bert Abbott, Team Captain of SCI BC’s Vancouver Island North Team

How long have you been at SCI BC and how many Charity Challenges have you participated in?

I have been with SCI BC for around 25 years. Prior to my injury 30 years ago, I worked in the hotel industry and the BC Tourism and Hotel Association and held a similar annual run/wheel fundraiser and with proceeds going to the then BCPA. I was part of the team that ran the Parksville event for two years. So it has come full circle. This is the fourth year I have participated in the Challenge.

What is your favourite part of the Charity Challenge?

Spending time with everyone on the day of the Challenge.

How will your team be participating in the virtual race this year?

We will be holding an Ice Cream and Wheel on the Nanaimo Harbourfront Walkway on Sunday, June 25 at 1:00 pm. Starting at the Nanaimo Sign at Maffeo Sutton Park.

Any tips or advice for someone who is new to participating in the Charity Challenge?

Get the message out to all your contacts. If you need help or support, contact Christina at clee@sci-bc.ca.
