Guidelines for Pedestrian Rights of Way

Updated on September 10, 2024

The Access Board and the Federal Highway Administration have jointly developed the guidance in this technical assistance manual to encourage standardization in the accessible design and construction of new sidewalks, curb ramps, street crossings, and related pedestrian facilities. The recommendations have been adapted from site and building provisions to meet the special conditions encountered in the public right-of-way. Although these recommended practices have been developed for new construction and alterations, jurisdictions will also find useful guidance here on improving the usability of existing pedestrian facilities.
