These guides contain the building requirements for persons with disabilities from the BC Building Code and includes illustrations and commentary. Thoughtful and careful use of these handbooks in applying the building requirements for persons with disabilities will benefit all members of the community.
Keep in mind that while you must meet the minimum requirements of the BC Building Code, you are welcome and encouraged to do more than the code requires because many people with disabilities and seniors benefit from having more accessibility features than the code requires.
The 2020 handbook references the 2018 Building Code, the 2014 handbook references the 2012 Building Code and the 2007 handbook references the 2006 Building Code. The newest code must be used for all new buildings. Be aware that the handbook is a summary of access issues and the full Building Code should also be referenced. As of March 8, 2024, all new permit applications must use the 2024 Building Code. The Building Access Handbook is always published after the Code that it references.
